The Squam Lakes Conservation Society is a land conservation organization dedicated to the protection of the natural environment in the Squam Lakes Region of central New Hampshire for the benefit of all present and future residents and visitors. SLCS was formed in 1960 by long-time residents of the area and obtained 501(c)(3) status as a private, non-profit charitable organization in 1961.
SLCS achieves the long-term protection of land by seeking, holding, and monitoring conservation easements and by accepting land ownership. It envisions a unique region of islands, shorefront, back lands, and mountains wherein a harmony between the natural environment and mankind is preserved forever. SLCS works towards this goal in cooperation with state and local authorities, businesses, other conservation organizations, residents, landowners, and visitors. More information about our mission and actions can be found in the SLCS Strategic Plan. As land values and property taxes in the Squam Lakes area continue to rise, pressure on landowners mounts to sell or develop their land, and our efforts become more and more urgent. Our staff can offer advice and assistance to landowners interested in taking conservation action. Members of our board of directors also serve as a valuable source of information. |
